Description

Build foundational reading skills with phonological awareness and phonics activities designed for older English learners. This resource provides explicit instruction and supported practice for students who need to develop English sound awareness, letter-sound connections, and early reading skills.

Created with upper elementary and early middle school English learners in mind, including students with limited or interrupted formal education (SLIFE), the activities use real photographs to connect unfamiliar English words with meaning. Students practice hearing and identifying sounds, working with syllables and vowels, and using sounds to read and write words.

What’s included

  • 66 animated PowerPoint slides: 6 model slides, 30 short-vowel slides, and 30 long-vowel slides
  • Student activity pages in full-page and half-page formats, plus 2 blank pages for additional words
  • Sound boxes to accompany the slides, plus 2 additional sound-box mats

Skills supported

Letter identification, sound isolation, syllables, vowel sounds, letter formation, vocabulary, reading, and writing.

Ways to use this resource

Use the animated slides for explicit instruction and modeling, then provide students with their own activity pages for guided practice. The sound boxes offer additional opportunities to work with individual sounds, while the handwriting lines support letter formation.

These activities work well for small-group instruction, reading warm-ups, intervention, and skills review. They are especially useful for beginning and early intermediate English learners, SLIFE students, and older students who need additional foundational literacy support.
