Building oral language skills is a key focus for English language development. Being intentional in our planning and providing structured opportunities to practice skills such as sentence patterning, academic and content vocabulary, and grammatical syntax is powerful pedagogy.
One of my favorite tools for building oral language skills is Speaking Mats. They are fun, engaging, and target skills students need. Take a closer look at how using speaking mats supports academic talk and builds confidence with multilingual learners.

What Are Speaking Mats?
Speaking Mats are visual discussion tools designed to support structured oral language practice. Each mat typically includes:
- A clear topic or theme
- Visuals to support comprehension
- Guiding questions that prompt discussion
- Sentence frames or stems to model and support the use of academic language
Students use the speaking mat as a visual anchor and scaffolded tool to talk with a partner or small group.

First, a Topic Poster is used to tap into, or build, students’ background knowledge around a given topic. This is done through a teacher led discussion. The topic poster, as seen above for Weather and Seasons, helps guide the initial discussion by asking questions. It can also be used to pre-teach essential vocabulary and used as a word bank resource.
It’s important to provide the tools students will need in order to be successful with the speaking task.

Why Speaking Mats Work So Well with English Learners
Speaking Mats remove many of the barriers that prevent students from participating in oral discussions.
Reduce Language Anxiety – Students don’t have to “come up with the words on their own.” The language support is right in front of them, which lowers stress and increases participation—especially for newcomers and emerging speakers.
Clear Language Expectations – When students see sentence frames and models, they understand how they’re expected to respond, not just what to talk about.
Promote Academic Talk – Instead of yes/no answers, Speaking Mats encourage students to use complete sentences, content vocabulary, and academic language tied to a specific language function (like describing, comparing, or explaining).
Support ALL Proficiency Levels – Speaking Mat are differentiated to meet the needs of varying proficiency levels:
- Emerging learners use short sentence frames
- Developing and expanding learners use sentence starters and can elaborate by adding details

How I Use Speaking Mats to Build Oral Language Skills
One of the things I love most about Speaking Mats is how versatile they are. Here are a few ways I regularly use them:
✔️ Warm-Up Activity
Speaking Mats are perfect for getting students talking at the beginning of a lesson, or at the end as a cool-down activity.
✔️ Small Group Language Practice
They work beautifully during small group instruction for targeted and structured discussions, especially when you want students practicing a specific language function (opinion, explain, describe).
✔️ Pre-Writing Support
Before students write, they talk. Speaking Mats help students rehearse ideas orally, which leads to stronger writing later. 🗣️ Oracy before literacy
✔️ Content Integration
I often use Speaking Mats to support science and social studies topics—like habitats, natural resources, weather, or community—so students are developing language and content knowledge at the same time.
Speaking Mats + Language Functions = Powerful Instruction
Speaking Mats are especially effective when paired with a clear language function, such as:
- Describe
- Compare and contrast
- Explain
- Express an opinion
- Ask/Answer Questions
By keeping the focus on how students are using language, Speaking Mats help make oral language instruction intentional instead of accidental.
Students aren’t just talking—they’re practicing the kind of oral language skills they need for classroom discussions, assessments, and academic success.

A Purposeful Tool That Makes a Big Impact
If you’re looking for a purposeful low-prep, high-impact way to get English learners talking and building their oral language skills, Speaking Mats are absolutely worth adding to your teaching toolbox.
If you’d like to see examples of Speaking Mats, or try them with your own students, I’ve linked resources below. Each set includes a background building poster, differentiated speaking mats, and fun Roll n’ Talk mats.

Speaking Mats are one of my favorite go-to activities for building oral language skills because they’re simple, flexible, and incredibly effective at getting students to speak with confidence and purpose.
